Funeral Prayer Guide
Salatul Janazah (Funeral Prayer) is a Fard Kifayah — a collective obligation upon the Muslim community. Here is how to perform it.
Preparation (Ghusl)
The body of the deceased must be given a ritual bath (Ghusl). This is performed by same-gender family members or trusted community members with proper respect.
Kafan (Shrouding)
Wrap the body in white unsewn cloth (Kafan). Men: 3 sheets. Women: 5 sheets. Tie the cloth securely from head and feet.
First Takbir — Al-Fatihah
The Imam makes the first Takbir (Allahu Akbar) and recites Al-Fatihah silently. Congregation follows.
Second Takbir — Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ
After the second Takbir, recite Salawat (Durood Ibrahim) for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
Third Takbir — Dua for the Deceased
After the third Takbir, make dua specifically for the deceased:
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, and pardon him.
Fourth Takbir — Final Salaam
After the fourth Takbir, make a brief dua, then end with Tasleem to the right side only:
Burial (Dafn)
Place the deceased in the grave on their right side, facing Qibla. Recite Bismillah and cover with soil. Avoid raising the grave more than a hand span.
